FAY'S 99 REGELS

CONCEPT & BOOK DESIGN

A book design made and printed in 2021. It was my bachelor's project. The book design consists of 99 rules plus procedures based on my house and the people entering my surroundings. The rules will tell my guests how to act and what to do when they enter my home.

Extra design information:

My bachelor project, 'FAY'S 99 REGELS' was the first project where I decided to look at myself, to create something 100% personal. The project consists of a manual filled with rules and procedures which I follow within my home, and which the guests in my home should follow as well. I exaggerated in the seriousness of this project to make it more demanding. Looking a the extremes was very important, so according to this manual - the guests in my home should wash their faces on the same place and in the same order as I do, for example.

This manual was put in a book. In the front of the book, all the 99 rules are summed up with its explanation and possible procedure referring to the back of the book with (self-designed) symbols. These rules are categorised by room, and even part of a room. In the back of the book  I drew 3 floor maps of the 3 rooms in my home (dorm). In these maps I put all the numbers of the rules, where they should be followed. The design itself was researched in the bachelor paper and was substantiated by existing theories combined with my own theories. The manual was printed on bright yellow paper, this way it will always catch the eye and attract attention; and this way the guests won’t forget to read the rules. I used a coptic binding to bind the book, this ensures that the book will be opened easily, without breaking.

The conclusion of my paper was a list of all the rules for designing an instructional text. This conclusion was made into a small book as attachment to the actual manual. This way the rulebook for designing instructional texts could be read during my jury - or when the readers of the book have questions about the design - which would make my design choices clear.
