Linotype & Intertype
BOOK & SYMBOL DESIGN
A book design focussing on references throughout a book. The assignment was to redesign a manual made in 1967 using the following restrictions: only use 1 typeface, 1 font,
1 column, 1 type size and no colour. I designed my own symbols to use during the references within the book and divided text from pictures. For the text pages I used a creme white paper, for the pictures I used an old creme, more yellow paper and for the flyleaf I used bright yellow, which was also the colour of the thread used to bind the book.

Extra design information:
I used the typeface Montserrat, which is a typeface which is pretty light; I did not want the text paragraphs to be black masses. This typeface was used in lower case, capitals and small capitals, this way there was a difference in the sizes of the text, titles and second titles.
The titles were put on the left side of the text so it would be clear what title belonged to what paragraph.
The symbols I designed from scratch were black masses, so that they could be easily spotted within the paragraphs. They were put behind every word which was explained in the book; every first time the word is used in the paragraph. On the right margin these symbols were put whenever the word which is connected to this symbol is explained on that page. For the pictures there was only 1 symbol, but by putting the page number in the superscript of the symbol, it can only refer to one image. And whenever there would be referred to a part of an image, the number would be put in subscript of the symbol.
The design of the second part of the book, the image-part, is totally different. I put the images in the same column as the text and put the footnote-text on the lower part of the page, this section is kept as empty space in the first part of the book. The page numbers are on the same place as the image-symbols were put on the first part of the book, the right margin. This way the reader can easily find the page the symbol referred to.
